Bean-to-Cup Coffee Machines for Small UK Kitchens: 3 Compared

A bean-to-cup coffee machine for a small kitchen needs room to work, not just a narrow place to stand. These three UK options have bodies 18-20 cm wide, but differ in milk preparation, refill access and cleaning space. Start with your available depth and overhead clearance, then decide whether you want black coffee, automatic milk or a steam wand.

How to choose

Measure in three directions. First, mark out the complete body width and depth on the worktop, leaving the manufacturer's required distance from walls and other objects; none of these machines is a shallow shelf appliance. Second, measure to the underside of any cupboard with lids and the tank accessible: both Melitta manuals call for at least 20 cm above the machine, so their closed height alone is not a fit test. Third, leave a route to withdraw the front trays and reach the side brew unit, rather than planning to lift a full machine whenever it needs cleaning. For the Smeg, ask the manufacturer to confirm suitable clearance for a tight installation because its manual does not give a numerical ventilation distance. Include the milk carton and rinsing vessel for the Latticia, or room to handle a jug at the Smeg's wand. If you only drink black coffee, the Purista avoids these milk accessories. Check your tallest cup against the specified clearance before ordering; a height-adjustable outlet does not establish a maximum cup size. All three still require routine cleaning and descaling. Delivery charges, postcode restrictions and optional accessories should be checked separately from the displayed machine price.

Melitta Purista F230-102 - Black20.0 x 46.0 x 33.4 cm (W x D x H), using the manual; calculated body footprint 920 cm2. The current family webpage lists 45.9 cm depth. Neither figure includes working clearance.[1][2]Top bean filling; water tank lifts upwards. Front tray and grounds access; brew unit behind the right-side cover. Manual: approximately 10 cm from walls/objects and at least 20 cm above. Exact withdrawal space is not specified.[1]No built-in milk frothing or hot-water function. Black-coffee use avoids a milk circuit; a separate frother needs its own space and cleaning. The manual recommends weekly brew-unit cleaning.[2][1]1.2 litre water tank and 125 g bean hopper.[1]Not confirmed
Melitta Latticia OT F300-100 - Frosted Black20.0 x 45.9 x 35.2 cm (W x D x H); calculated body footprint 918 cm2. This excludes the external milk vessel and working clearance.[3]Top bean hopper and rear-left water tank; precise tank withdrawal direction is not confirmed. Tray and grounds pull forwards; brew unit is behind the right-side cover. Manual: approximately 10 cm from walls/objects and at least 20 cm above.[3]Automatic milk via the supplied hose in a milk carton or vessel. A branded container and milk lance are optional, not included. Flush the hose in clean water after milk use; the milk unit also needs disassembly and cleaning.[3][4]1.5 litre water tank and 250 g bean hopper.[3]Height-adjustable outlet with a published maximum clearance of 14 cm.[4]
Smeg BCC12BLMUK - Matte Black18.0 x 43.3 x 33.6 cm (W x D x H); calculated body footprint 779.4 cm2 from the UK technical sheet. The sheet's 26.5 cm packaging depth is not the machine depth. Allow working space beyond the body.[5]Beans and water are accessed from above; tank has a lifting handle. Trays and grounds withdraw at the front; brew unit access is on the left. Numerical ventilation clearance is not confirmed. Do not operate in a closed built-in cabinet.[6]Manual steam wand, not automatic milk. Allow room for a milk jug, which is an optional accessory. Clean the wand after use and remove its lower parts for cleaning; the brew unit is removable.[5][6]1.4 litre water tank and 150 g bean hopper.[5]Published cup height: 9-13.5 cm with the drip tray, up to 18.5 cm with the tray removed.[5]

Our picks

1

Melitta Purista F230-102 - Black

Black-coffee drinkers with a narrow worktop.

Choose the Purista instead of the Latticia when you want black coffee and would rather avoid a milk hose, external carton and milk-cleaning routine. Its lower body is useful where height is limited, although the manual still requires clear space above it.

Before you choose: The Latticia offers automatic milk and larger water and bean capacities at the same body width. The Purista is not a milk-drink alternative unless you add a separate frother and allow space for it.

More details

The Purista is the straightforward choice here if milk drinks are not part of your routine. Its 20 cm body saves width, but the roughly 46 cm depth and overhead access are the real checks to make before buying. It has no milk system, so adding a separate frother later would change the space calculation. Pros: Narrow body without a milk vessel to accommodate; Lower body than the Latticia. Consider: Still about 46 cm deep; No built-in milk preparation. Limitation: The outlet adjusts in height, but a numerical maximum cup height was not established. Measure your cup and confirm clearance before purchase.

2

Melitta Latticia OT F300-100 - Frosted Black

Automatic milk drinks from a narrow machine.

Choose the Latticia instead of the Purista for automatic milk drinks, or instead of the Smeg if you do not want to steam milk manually. The external milk supply is flexible, but you must plan where both the carton and cleaning vessel will sit.

Before you choose: The Smeg has a narrower and shallower body, while the Purista avoids milk-system care. The Latticia adds a hose and milk unit to clean, and its higher body does not remove the need for overhead clearance.

More details

The Latticia adds automatic milk preparation without increasing body width beyond the Purista's 20 cm. A hose draws from a separate carton or vessel, so that body measurement understates the space occupied when making a cappuccino. It is a sensible alternative if milk automation matters more than keeping accessories off the worktop. Pros: Automatic milk without a wider body than the Purista; Larger water tank and hopper than the Purista. Consider: Milk carton and rinsing vessel need extra room; Hose and milk unit add cleaning tasks. Limitation: The published body footprint is not a complete milk-drink setup measurement. Do not assume the required ventilation space is sufficient to remove every component without repositioning the machine.

3

Smeg BCC12BLMUK - Matte Black

A narrower body with manual milk steaming.

Choose the Smeg instead of the Latticia when saving 2 cm of body width and 2.6 cm of depth matters more than automatic milk. Its removable drip tray also offers an option for taller cups, subject to the stated clearance.

Before you choose: Milk requires manual steaming and space for a jug, and the checked offer costs more than either Melitta. The manual does not give a numerical ventilation gap, so a very tight installation needs confirmation from Smeg.

More details

The Smeg's 18 cm width and 43.3 cm depth give it the smallest calculated body footprint in this comparison. It combines automatic coffee preparation with a manual steam wand, rather than the Latticia's automatic milk arrangement. The smaller body is useful only if there is also room to handle a jug and reach the service panel. Pros: Smallest calculated body footprint of these three; Manual steam option without a separate electric frother. Consider: Milk steaming is manual; Tight-installation ventilation distance needs confirmation. Limitation: Dimensions are for the exact UK-suffix model, not its packaging. No measured jug-handling or maintenance envelope is available; do not treat body dimensions as a guaranteed fit.

How we assess products

This is a desk-based comparison of manufacturer specifications, operating manuals and UK retailer offers, not hands-on testing. We prioritised narrow bodies, practical access and the extra space associated with milk preparation; the order favours a simple black-coffee setup before specialist milk options, not a universal performance winner. Footprints are calculated as published width multiplied by depth, not measured operating areas. We have not tested taste, noise, reliability or cleaning speed, and affiliate relationships do not determine the order.

Frequently asked questions

Which of these bean-to-cup machines has the narrowest body?

The Smeg BCC12BLMUK is 18 cm wide, compared with 20 cm for the two Melitta machines. That does not make an 18 cm gap a suitable installation: allow for access, ventilation and using a milk jug. Its 43.3 cm depth also means it still occupies a substantial length of worktop.

Can I put a bean-to-cup coffee machine under a kitchen cupboard?

Only if the installation satisfies the manual and you can refill and clean it safely. The Purista and Latticia manuals require at least 20 cm of space above the appliance, in addition to the machine's height. Check lid and tank access too; do not assume a machine fits just because its closed body clears the cupboard.

Is a narrow coffee machine also a shallow coffee machine?

No. These bodies are only 18-20 cm wide but about 43-46 cm deep, before allowing working clearance. Measure depth independently and leave enough access to pull out the front trays without placing the appliance precariously at the edge.

Which milk setup uses less extra worktop space?

Black-coffee-only operation avoids a milk vessel entirely. The Latticia uses a hose in a separate milk carton or container, while the Smeg needs room to handle a jug at its steam wand. There is no measured total-space winner here: the containers you use and the room needed to rinse them affect the result.
